A word in Early Noldorin Word-lists with glosses “face, front, forward surface”, cognate to ᴱQ. anta “cheek” (PE13/137, 160).
Conceptual Development: In the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, G. ant instead had the gloss “cheek” and was derived from ᴱ✶ṃ̄t- (GL/19), probably related to ᴱ√MATA “eat” (QL/59). In Gnomish Lexicon Slips correcting that document, Tolkien revised the gloss to “face” (PE13/110).
