Conceptual Development: The Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s had G. cub “hollow” with deleted variant {cûf >>} (GL/27), probably based on the early root ᴱ√KUPU “hump” (QL/49).

An archaic word for “hollow” derived from primitive ✶nābā, largely replaced by S. coll “hollow” in modern Sindarin as mentioned in the Quendi and Eldar essay from 1959-60 (WJ/414). It survived as nǭf in the Northern dialect of Sindarin, but in other dialects the ǭ became au, after which the final v was lost, making the word naw rather indistinctive leading it to fall out of use.
