Gnomish

pad

noun. [unglossed]

padhwen

noun. bark

A noun for “bark” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/63), apparently based on the early root ᴱ√PARA [PAÐA?] which might mean “peel” (QL/72).

padhra-

padra-

verb. to walk

tôdhi

noun. paddock

A word appearing as G. tôdhi {“fringe” >>} “paddock” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s based on ᴱ√tadh- (GL/71), probably from ancient ✱tāðī since [[g|[ā] became [ō]]] in Gnomish.

Neo-Sindarin: I would adapt this word as ᴺS. tódhi “paddock” based on the Neo-Root ᴺ√TAD “enclosure”, because while [[os|[ā] became [au]]] in Sindarin, it later [[s|become [ō] or [o]]] in polysyllables. I would assume the final -i was the result of some ancient abstract noun suffix (< ✱tādiyē), much like in S. serni “pebble bank”.

path

noun. peel, skin of fruit, fine bark (paper)

A word appearing in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s with glosses “peel, skin of fruit, fine bark (paper)” (GL/63), hence probably related to ᴱQ. parma “skin, bark; parchment; book” from the contemporaneous Qenya Lexicon under the early root ᴱ√PARA [✱PAÐA] (QL/72). Its plural form as padhin, indicating a primitive form of ✱pað- where the final ð became th as usual in Gnomish.
