bactha

noun. leg

A noun in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s for “a leg” (GL/21), clearly with a different etymology than ᴱQ. pelko “leg” (QL/73), probably derived instead from the early root ᴱ√VAHA “travel” (QL/99).

cwîl

adjective. quiet, peaceful, gentle

An adjective appearing as G. {cwild >>} cwîl “quiet, peaceful, gentle” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/28). It is clearly related to ᴱQ. qilda “quiet, hushed, still” based on the early root ᴱ√QḶŘḶ [QḶÐḶ] (QL/78).

Neo-Sindarin: For purposes of Neo-Sindarin I would adapt this word as ᴺS. pell fitting the Sindarin phonetic developments from primitive ✱kwildā as originally suggested by Fiona Jallings, but Fiona gave it the same gloss as its Early Qenya equivalent, whereas I would use the glosses “quiet, peaceful, gentle” from Gnomish.

gogail

noun. mouth

A noun appearing as G. gogel “mouth” in The Gnomish Grammar (GG/8) and as {gogel >} gogíl or gogail “mouth” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/40). In the latter document, Tolkien said it was a combination of G. go- “together” and G. cail “lip”, from more archaic forms gwa-caíl, gwa-cil. An unrelated word G. mem “mouth” also appeared in Gnomish Lexicon (GL/57), perhaps related to G. beg “chin” which Tolkien connected to ᴱQ. “(closed) mouth” = “the two lips” (GL/57; QL/72).

Neo-Sindarin: I’ve used these Gnomish words as the inspiration for a neologism ᴺS. gobem “mouth”, based on the (neologism) ᴺS. pemp “lip”, where the reduction of -mp to -m finally is an irregular assimilation to the preceding voiced b: -mp > -mb > -m.

thol-

verb. to roll

A verb in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s appearing as G. thol- {“roll. tr. & intr.” >>} “roll” (GL/73). It could be based on some variant ✱ᴱ√ÞOL of the early root ᴱ√TOL+U from the contemporaneous Qenya Lexicon which had derivatives like ᴱQ. tolu- “roll up, furl” (QL/94).

Neo-Sindarin: Since we have no later words for “roll”, I would retain ᴺS. thol- “to roll” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin based on a (Sindarin-only) Neo-Root ✱√THOL. That conflicts from 1964 S. thôl “helmet” which is also derived from √THOL (PE17/188), but in 1957 Tolkien derived this helmet word from √STOL instead (PE17/186), leaving room for ᴺS. thol- “roll”.
