Thus far I am making progress with translating the words, but the sentence doesn't seem cohesive. I think it is a matter of finding the correct meanings of each word, since a sentence is beginning to form. However, it is hard to tell what words are whole, and what words are compounded. Could you give me any insight on where this inscription is from? It may help.

Ah, I see. Well, I think we can figure it out.

That does fit somewhat with what I have so far. Here is my [very] rough idea of what the sentence means.

"Departest thou from [thy] time among us, [and walk?] alone in Taur nu Fuin."

As I said, a very rough idea, partially because many of the words have more than one meaning, and partially, as I mentioned, because I don't know for certain which words are compounded (two words put together). Here are the possible meanings I have.

Auva:

Single word: 'auta' = depart, be lost, pass away, disappear

Compound: 'au' = away, off, away from, if only | '-va/va' = from

Most likely meaning: Depart

Imle:

Single word: 'imle' = yourself, thyself [formal]

Most likely meaning: yourself/implied 'you'

Ar:

Single word: 'ar' = but, and, day, beside, near, outside

Most likely meaning: Unknown

Lume:

Single word: 'lume' = time (the hour), darkness

Most likely meaning: Unknown

Messe:

Compound: 'me' = we, us | '-sse' = at, he loves himself, himself/herself/itself, Locative Ending

Most likely meaning: among us/ us (as a location)

Taur nu Fuin:

Single word: 'Taur nu Fuin' = place name

Compound: [S] 'taur' = forest | 'nu' = under, beneath | 'fuin' = night/darkness

Most likely meaning: Taur nu Fuin (place name) [I must assume that this refers to the location because it is in Sindarin, while the rest of the sentence is in Quenya.]

Emesse:

Single word: 'emesse' = alone/solitary/ by yourself

Most likely meaning: alone

These are just my own notes and contain my own speculation on which meaning is most likely considering the context within the sentence, but perhaps you have a better idea of wider context and possible meaning. Hopefully this sheds some light.

I am still happy to help if you have any questions, and I am still doing some research, but I am not sure how much I can help-- my apologies. True, that particular translation doesn't sound very encouraging, but it is certainly not the only translation. For example, all the elements are there for a sentence reading 'The time is near when you will depart from darkness, alone in the forest under night'. Additionally, I realized that the word 'messe', which I translated 'among us/us (as a location)', also means 'on us'.

It is my pleasure, although I am not sure how much help I really lent. But I enjoy working with the language and learning more about it, and this is certainly a challenge. As I said, I'm happy to answer (or try to answer) any further questions, and I would also recommend asking Aldaleon or Roandil, both of whom have much more skill than I in translating and working with Tolkien's languages.
