Gandalphus #4750

Hallo! I am doing a book for learning Quenya, but it would be necessary for me to get much help. This would be the first chapter, but I do need some adjustment. In this chapter I wish to introduce the Singular and the Plural (all in Quenya). How to say "Grammar" in Quenya?

Kielimies #4752

The noun "grammar" in Quenya = tengwesta

In translating "singular" and "plural", one might make use of the Neo-Quenya adjectives eritë and linitë. IMO, "plural form" could also be expressed with either hosta or rimbë.

Gandalphus #4755

Thank you! But it sounds a little strange to use the same word for "Grammar" and for "System of letters". I think "tengwesta" would rather be "Alphabet", isn't it? Letter is "tengwar".

Kielimies #4756

The first alternative synonym for "grammar" that comes to mind is the plural noun lambesanyer (s = þ) "language-rules".

Tengwa is "a letter". Tengwë means "a sign, token, indication; a writing".

Gandalphus #4757

Thank you very much again! How do you see all this chapter? Please tell me to change mistakes.

Lambesanyer

Vilya quetta ná. Yando alda quetta ná. Minë nótë na. Minë (1) ar Atta (2) ar Neldë (3) nóti nar. Vilya eritë quetta ná. Quendi linitë quetta ná.

Quettaparma: minya, ranta, mi, ná (na, nar...), massë...?, -yë, ar, elen, i, ua (uar), vilya, cemen, mal, nu, imbi, alda, lassë, oron, yando, sinomë, yaulë, man...?, altë, pityë, taurë, tanomë...

Kielimies #4763

The Quenya in your previous comment makes sense to me.

Parmandil #4768

Tengwasta is attested by Tolkien as 'grammar', so you should use it for that purpose, not a neologism. His word for 'alphabet' as a list of letters is tegnwasse.

When looking at how to use a word, you need to consider the entire gloss. If you do so, you will see that tengwesta refers to an organization of things that indicate meaning (tengwe), be they phonemes, morphemes, or graphemes. It is 'the structure of language' if you will. As such, it is totally distinct from a collection of tengwa.

Parmandil #4769

You have several errors in your text from a quick glance:

You use exclusively nár instead of the attested verbs of location

You use ye far too liberally, when it is only used of pairs generally associated (and should prob have dual agreement)

When listing 3 items, you use ar instead of attested options X ar Y ar Z, ta X ta Y ta Z, X Y Z

You use vilya instead of menel for the location of Anar, Isil, and eleni

You completely neglect all case usage for mi, but still use it rather nonspecifically.

You use mori 'black (pl)' for some reason instead of queni 'people'

etc...

Gandalphus #4802

I need to put the verb "to be", for I think it is necessary also for the student. I must make it easier for him. Isn't it also a verb of location...? I have changed the text. I can't teach all the different usages of mi in the first chapter, you know, and it could seem a little nonspecific, but the bottom of the question is to teach them afterwards (and all the other more difficult things). I thank your help sincerely. At your service.
