Name translation

InkyRain #2298

I'm from China and this is my very first post. Please forgive my poor English. :)

I'd like to create an Elvish name for myself but I've find it quite difficult for me lately (well, it seems my Elvish is poor too). The name shall include the meaning of "the follower of celestial beings". Let me explain about it.

The "follower(追随者)" here, means a bit "helper”, and also "a person who admires the celestials”, “a person who's willing to fulfill the celestials' will".

The "celestial beings" is the best translation of "神" I can find, but I've heard that it’s not commonly used. Some have translated "神" into "god", but the relationship between "神" and human isn't as unequal as god and human. Some have translated it into "spirit", but I suppose it is more closer to "soul".

I’m not sure if there are Elvish words that can discribe such meanings? And how to create an Elvish name with them (if they do exist)?

Aiya, InkyRain! Upon seeing that you are also from China I see that I have found another friend. Welcome, 老乡😂! As for your name, Q. Meneldil and S. Elfaron both seem like good names. But let's wait for the experts to comment also!

Don't worry, your English is fine. If I understand your explanation of the Chinese correctly, what you are asking for is almost exactly the meaning of Valandil "Friend of the angelic Powers", who in Tolkien's stories is the name of a few Lords of Men. If you don't want to use an already attested name Maiandil, Ainundil would have a similar effect (Maiar are lesser spirits compared to the Valar; collectively both groups can be referred to as Ainur).

Hello there, folk! so, there could be many interpretations, i'll pick for exapmle, "Sámo" and "Ainu" and compose "Ainustámo" as in "Rómestámo" that means east helper(S->St in this case because of the archaich root). But it depends on what you consider more close in your native lenguage, you could pick Eru->Erustámo="Helper of the one", or: Máya->Máyastámo->"Helper (another variant) of angelic spirits" (not very shure about this last one). Or maybe the suffix "-ndil" and create something like "Ainundil" or "Erundil", but i think "Sámo" fits better. Good luck!

I've checked the names you've suggested and was surprised to find that almost all names I can look up in the dictionary are masculine name? Oh yes I haven't notice I'm actually a girl...

And about "神", "Vala", "Maia", "Ainu", "Eru" and "Máya" have strong connection with religions, but "神" has little to do with it. I wonder if there is such a word in Elvish?

The suffix "-(n)dil" means "friend", I suppose? And "Sámo" means "helper"? Both of them aren't complete... The main meaning is still "follower". So sorry to mislead you! I've learnt much by reading your posts(and I found a 老乡 Ha!).

I'd say -ndil is probably gender neutral, but you probably can make it specifically feminin by using -ndilme. Likewise sámo is probably gender neutral as well, but in general names ending in -o have a tendency to be masculine, so you might want to avoid it. Another possibility would be satar “trusty follower, loyal companion”. Regarding Vala, Maia (Máya is an more ancient spelling), Ainu, at least from the Elves' point of view their existence not so much a matter of religion as a fact of life, e. g. one Elvish king married a Maia, when the High Elves lived in Valinor the Valar thought them crafts, Gandalf, Sauron and the Balrog are all Maia etc., it's just that Tolkien translates those terms with religious words for a lack of better opinions. Perhaps this article might clarify things or @Ruilalwen can provide further insight knowing both Chinese and what Ainur are, but I believe it could work. However I don't think Eru "The One" is a good choice for what you want.

Sorry you two for the late response. Yes, @InkyRain, Gilruin's right. So Eru "The One" is basically the God. He's the father of the Valar, and he created the Ainur with a thought. He's like 盘古, in Chinese mythology. Then the Valar are his children, with a few well-known examples as Varda, Manwë, and Morgoth/Melkor, much like 玉皇大帝. Then the Maia were lesser of these, like 玉帝's counselor's (like 托塔李天王 and such). The Ainur were lesser being than the Valar and more numerous in number (though only a few are well known). The Elvish king Thingol married Melian, a Maia (parents of Lúthien Tinúviel) just like Gilruin said. So yes, you should take the suggestions and avoid Eru, I think. Good luck! 🙃(And if you want translations of your 神 you could probably search up soul and spirit.)

The Ainur were lesser being than the Valar and more numerous in number

Ainur is the term for both Valar and Maiar

Ruilalwen #2316

Ah yes. Sorry about that. I really should stop messaging when I am still sleepy🙃
