Translating a city's name

Elenmir #4830

Hi there, Could you help with translating some names/ descriptions?

I would need some kind of poetic names for a city in a story of mine. (like the seven Gondolin has)

The city is of very elegant and lofty design but still strong and enduring. And it is the great fortress of Maglor in Maglors gap. It's most defining characteristic are It's many high towers. It's a city where many artists of different kind, but also many warriors and craftsmen of the Noldor live.

I thought about: City of songs City of silver spears City of a thousand towers

But I'm open for other ideas if someone has some. I would appreciate translations to both Sindarin and Quenya if it is possible.

Thank you in advance for helping and please excuse mistakes in spelling or phrasing. English isn't my mother tongue.

Mae govannen!

In Quenya, you could have: Lindalos or Lirios (song-city) and Silcataldon (place of shining spears). I'm not entirely confident in making a translation with "tower"; the plurals get to be nightmarish in compounds.

sil-khatal-non > sil-xatal-non > sil-xatal-don > sil-katal-don (someone please check?)

It would probably be better for someone else to do Sindarin options; I am rusty with it.

As always, I recommend a second opinion!

  • City of songs Caras Lind
  • City of silver spears Caras Aith Gelib/Caras Celebaith
  • City of a thousand towers Caras Beraid Veneg

All modeled after:

  • S. Caras Galadhon loc. “City of the Trees”
  • S. Caras i-Ngelaidh loc. “City of the Trees”

Thank you very much! To both of you, Ambarkas and Celebrinor. They are brilliant.
