Gildor in Quenya

Auriel #4972

I want to translate Gildor's name in Quenya.

The -dor suffix is -tur, but I'm not sure about Gil.

I know it means star, but the "el" root is similar in Quenya and Sindarin, so if it was El--tur in Q., it would have been translated as El--dor in S. (I'm making him a character who was a quenya-speaker first).

Are there other words in quenya with similar meanings, and phonetics closer to Gil, that could have been translated that way ?

Thanks

Hi, I am not an expert about this. So what I write will only be my personal opinion. In the dictionary there are several names releted with names means "star". In Quenya 'Elen' names very popular: Elemmacil, Elemmire, Elendur, Elentir, Ellerríne, Elestirnë, Elessar, Elendil.... but I can find a few 'gil' names (Like Ilmandur and Ilmare which depends on very old 'ilma- starlight'). In Sindarin you both find 'gil' names and and 'el' names (especially in the family tree of Elu Thingol, like a prefix). According to Morgoth's Ring in Quenya there is a serious distinction between elen and ngil. ✓elen refer actual great stars, ✓ngil >nille (and ✓ tin>tinwe) refer imitation of the stars in Varda's protective dome called Nur-menel. In Quenya Ngil root seemingly mostly used for silver glint or silver light rather than actual star.
