Elvish names?

sahrotaar #4244

Hey,

as a huge fan of LOTR, I like to use Sindarin or Quenya names for both my D&D characters (PCs and NPCs) and places in my homebrew world.

Are the following names correctly formed, can they exist in that way? What can be improved?

  • Erynmor - dark forest, a primeval forest, home of pagan/shamanistic wood-elven tribes
  • Rhivendor - winterlands, home of the snow elves
  • Artangor - most likely incorrect, should be Artang(a)-dor, from arata + anga (artanga) + dor (land).
  • Angoris - dragon-blade, a magic dragon-slaying sword
  • Galadris - radiant blade, a magic sword blessed by an elven moon deity
  • Araeglos - (ara + aeglos) a snow elf character
  • Ravaron - wild hunter, a wood elf character
  • Arantawar - lord of the forest, an ancient deity worshipped by some wood elves
  • Morloth - black rose, a dark elf character
  • Cyron - new moon, a moon elf character

Here is what I would do.

  • Erynmor > Erymmor [n+m > mm]
  • Rhivendor > Dor Rhîw "Land of Winter" (I am unsure of -wd- as it only shows up in Noldorin.)
  • Artangor > (It appears you are mixing Quenya and Sindarin)
  • Angoris (not even sure what is being used)
  • Galadris (Edit: This would be correct if using Sindarin.)
  • Araeglos (this seems fine if you are going for "Noble-Icicle")
  • Ravaron > (Edit: unsure on this one.)
  • Arantawar > Arannawar (Notę: this is Sindarin)
  • Morloth (is Black-Flower)
  • Cyron > Cýron

If you have any questions let me know. These are all Sindarin.

Thank you!

Angoris (not even sure what is being used) lhugim lhûg+cim

That uses Quenya ango (dragon) and rissë (slash/cut, as in Imladris). What I also liked about the names of the two swords I mentioned (as well as three others I did not have in my list as I did not want to overwhelm you - they are Lúmëris - time, Rhovaris - wilderness/forest, and Ringëris - winter/northern lands) is that they all share the same ending -ris and are made up of three syllables.

I think I am generally mixing Sindarin and Quenya too much...

Ah! That's why I didn't recognize it. Ango is middle Quenya. I would note that I only do Sindarin. My knowledge of Quenya is very small.

Mixing Quenya and Sindarin is not recommended unless it was done by Tolkien himself. We generally keep them separate.

If using Quenya, you would use hravan for the Sindarin rhovan.

If wanting Sindarin with riss “cleft; cleft, cloven, separate,” the cognate of rissë:

  • Lhugris "dragon-cleft"
  • Galadris "radiant-cleft"
  • Rhovadhris wilderness-cleft"
  • Luris "time-cleft"
  • Ringris "cold-cleft"

Again, these are all Sindarin.
