Ads from Google

Hi everyone,

I want to thank all of you for your continued support and participation in this community. Tolkien's languages are fascinating, and a subject worth studying. Without you, Parf Edhellen would not have become what it is today.

As some of you are aware, I have for a time accepted donations as a way to cover costs related to the hosting and development of the website. It was semi-successful initiative, but as time went on and the website continued to exist, donors dropped off, to the point where only a few individuals were covering all the costs. I am extremely grateful for all the donations I have received to date, and would like to extend a special thanks to those who are still donating.

However, I believe that there has to be a better way than to rely on your generousness, and this is why I want to try out ad generated revenue. In partnership with Google Adense, I will be introducing innocuous ads at non-disruptive locations. I will be very careful in this experimentation, and make sure that no content is disturbed by these ads. Furthermore, in my selection of ads, I have specifically rejected the following form of ads:

• Animated ads.
• Ads related to sensitive topics, including, but not limited to, gambling and casinos.
• Ads which float over content.

By transitioning from donations to ad revenue, I hope to be able to continue to invest in this website, adding new exciting features, while improving its overall availability and reliability. I also hope that the extra income will cover experimentation with service offerings on Amazon AWS, to accelerate the development of new features.

If you are, at any time, irritated by the placement or visual appearance of these ads, please let me know.

I have reintroduced the ads. I am not quite satisfied with how they appear, so I will be tweaking their size and location over the coming days. Thank you for your patience and continued support!

Hello there!

You may have already noticed this, or been notified, but there is a slight problem with the ad placement in the flashcards game. It works fine most of the time, but occasionally (generally with names and locations) the reverse side of the card is long enough that the 'next card' button is hidden beneath the add, requiring the page to be reloaded in order to go on. I think that moving the add down a little further should fix this easily.

I also wanted to thank you for your work on this beautiful website; I look forward to learning here!

Yes, I noticed that too. Due to the relative frequency of such flashcards, it can be pretty disruptive, so I think that it would be good to tweak the ad placement.

Thank you for your feedback! I will take the following corrective actions: (1) evaluate whether it is possible to disable ads on the flashcard page, (2) expand the whitespace around flashcard to ensure that there is always sufficient room for the card to render.

I'll incorporate these changes in the next version of Parf Edhellen!
