amorta-

verb. to heave

A verb for “to heave” appearing only in its active participle form amortala “heaving” in the Markirya poem of the 1960s (MC/222). It appears to be a combination of am- “up” and orta- “raise”, or possibly orta- “rise” since in the poem it is used intransitively: ëar amortala “the seas heaving”.

Conceptual Development: In the Oilima Markirya poem from around 1930s, Tolkien instead had the adjective for ᴱQ. qalume “heaving” (MC/213). Its etymology is unclear, since ᴱ√QALA (QL/76) was usually associated with “death” in the this period and later. The Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s had a similar verb stem ᴱQ. amu- “raise” under the early root ᴱ√AM(U) “up(wards)” (QL/30).
