mat

noun. food, meal, meal, [ᴱQ.] meal time; [ᴹQ.] food

A noun glossed “food, meal” in the Declension of Nouns from the early 1930s with a stem form matt- (PE21/27), clearly based on ᴹ√MAT “eat”. Tolkien specified that as the suffix -mat, it was the basis of names for meals (PE21/32). The Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s also had ᴱQ. mat (matt-) “meal, meal time” under the early root ᴱ√MATA “eat” (QL/59).

Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya I would use this word only for “meal”, and would instead use Q. matta for “food”.

matie

noun. eating

The gerund form of the verb mat- “eat” appearing in the (1948) 3rd. sg. possessive form matietta “his eating” (PE22/119); in later Quenya this would be matierya.

matwa

whether, which of two

An adjectival correlative meaning “whether, which of two” appearing in Demonstrative, Relative, and Correlative Stems (DRC) from 1948 (PE23/107), a combination of interrogative ᴹQ. ma and ᴹQ. atwa “either”. Presumably like atta “two”, the noun modified by matwa remains in the singular, such as: matwa nér i elda cenne “which (of two) men did the Elf see”. It can can also be used (instead of ma) to introduce any question where there are only two possible answers. In such cases atwa “either” is used separate the alternatives: matwa i elda lende formen atwa hyarmen “did the Elf travel north or south”.

noun. matrimony, matrimony, [ᴱQ.] state of marriage

It was also mentioned as a cognate of ᴱN. gwedhw “matrimony” in Early Noldorin Word-lists of the 1920s, but there it was a derivative of ᴱ√wed- (PE13/146).
