Gnomish

nith

noun. wax

A noun for “wax” in Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s derived from primitive ᴱ✶nēgittĕ (GL/60).

nitha

noun. a candle

A noun appearing as {nithla >>} nitha “a candle” in Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, an elaboration of G. nith “wax” (GL/60). According to the editors, the deletion of the l might have been a smudge, but this word was followed by another one: G. {nithlafast >>} nithla “candlestick”. This supports the notion that “candle” was revised to nitha.

nithla

noun. candlestick

A noun appearing as {nithlafast >>} nithla “candlestick” in Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, based on G. {nithla >>} nitha “candle” (GL/60). The second element of the deleted form was the (also deleted) word G. fast “holder, stand” (GL/33).
