A verb in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s appearing as G. thol- {“roll. tr. & intr.” >>} “roll” (GL/73). It could be based on some variant ✱ᴱ√ÞOL of the early root ᴱ√TOL+U from the contemporaneous Qenya Lexicon which had derivatives like ᴱQ. tolu- “roll up, furl” (QL/94).
Neo-Sindarin: Since we have no later words for “roll”, I would retain ᴺS. thol- “to roll” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin based on a (Sindarin-only) Neo-Root ✱√THOL. That conflicts from 1964 S. thôl “helmet” which is also derived from √THOL (PE17/188), but in 1957 Tolkien derived this helmet word from √STOL instead (PE17/186), leaving room for ᴺS. thol- “roll”.
