A noun for “fine wool, down” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/74), probably based on the early root ᴱ√OWO having to do with wool (QL/71).
Gnomish
uf
preposition. out of, forth, from
uf
noun. fine wool, down
uf(f)edhin
noun/adjective. outlaw, outcast; one who changes his clan and goes to a new kinship
A word in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “out of, forth, from”, said to be the equivalent of ᴱQ. ū (GL/74). The closest form in the contemporaneous Qenya Lexicon is ᴱQ. ū “beneath” under the early root ᴱ√Ū “under” (QL/96), but the Gnomish word hints at a different root, perhaps ✱ᴱ√UVU. Compare G. gôf versus ᴱQ. yáva < ᴱ√ẎAVA (GL/38; QL/105).
