A word appearing as {mavain >>} ᴱQ. maite “maple” in Early Qenya Word-lists (PE16/140), likely based on ᴱQ. má “hand” and perhaps simply ᴱQ. maite “handed” as suggested by Wynne and Gilson.
Conceptual Development: ᴱQ. mavoisi “chestnut” from the Qenya Lexicon and Poetic and Mythological Words of Eldarissa of the 1910s also seems to be based on an adjectival form of ᴱQ. má “hand”, seen more clearly in its fuller name ᴱQ. alda mavoite “chestnut” where the second element is ᴱQ. mavoite “having hands” (QL/57; PME/57).
Neo-Quenya: Given the ambiguity of the form maite, for purposes of Neo-Quenya I would restore the deleted form as ᴺQ. mavaina “maple” as a combination of má “hand” and [ᴺQ.] vaina “clad”. For “chestnut” I would use ᴺQ. olmos (olmoss-) inspired by G. omlos (GL/62).
