Early Quenya

ilsa

noun. (mystic name of) silver

A noun in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s that was the “mystic name of silver” (QL/42) as opposed to ordinary ᴱQ. telpe “silver” (QL/91) in much the same way ᴱQ. laure was the “magical name” of gold as opposed to ordinary ᴱQ. kulu (LT/100).

Conceptual Development: In later writings, Tolkien retained the distinction between Q. laurë for golden light or color vs. Q. malta for gold as a metal, but he made no such distinctions for silver.

ilsalunte

proper name. Silver Boat, Moon

A name for the Ship of the Moon in the earliest Lost Tales (LT1/192), a combination of ilsa “silver” and lunte “ship”, as suggested by Christopher Tolkien (LT1A/Ilsaluntë).
