Just a thought: Could Oropher also mean tall-and-quick?
From oro - tall, and pherya - ready, quick, prompt?

Have you checked out oropher? I think Oropher is Thranduil's father, according to Parf Edhellen, and Thranduil is in Sindarin. Oropher, on the other hand, is comprised of oro and pherya, of which oro can be Quenya and Primitive Elvish (of the meaning tall) and pherya is Primitive Elvish only. So considering this, maybe it couldn't be. But there is a high possiblity that I am wrong.
I wouldn't say it's absolutely impossible, but I don't think it's the most likely. From Primitive Elvish oro-pherya, I would expect the Sindarin name to develop to Erphair (with final vowel loss and i-affection/intrusion), which is not particularly close to Oropher, so I think that the explanation orod + fêr is still more better.
