song/poem translation

ferret #4470

Our illustrious GM for a Middle Earth themed game we are playing wrote a short little song/poem for one of our sessions and I'd like to see if we can get translated into Sindarin if it wouldn't be too much trouble please.

Here we wait, here we watch

Your proud sentinels, your grave wardens

Our lamp, your purest light

Our toil, your triumphant grove

Here we wait, here we watch

Til darkness close at the end of all days

Thanks for the help!

I will come up with something probably tonight for you. Unless someone gets to it first. 😅

Here you go. Would like to see if others come up with something else.

  • Sí dharthab/dharthof, sí diriab/diriof
  • Here we [inc/exclusive] wait, here we watch
  • i·Mberyr derlaing gín, i·mberyr lyng gín
  • Your proud protectors, your grave protectors
  • e·Galar bín/vín, e·galad 'lan gín
  • Our [inc/exclusive] lamp, your [bright shining] white light
  • e·Dass bín/vín, e·daur 'ellui gín
  • Our [inc/exclusive] toil, your triumphant forest
  • Sí dharthab/dharthof, sí diriab/diriof
  • Here we [inc/exclusive] wait, here we watch
  • Naden vôr dêl n' e·vethed oer il
  • Til darkness finishes at the end of all days

This is great! Thanks so much for taking the time and effort for something a little longer than the usual request.

Mayhaps Quenyan would bring you delight.:

Nai Quenyava au tulyë alassë.:

Hí lartalwë, hí tirwë

Varyalya verië, Varyalya lunga

Calmangwa, cálë poicaín

Motangwa, taurë alcarin

Varyalya verië, Varyalya lunga

Tenn' Ambar-metta

Tenn' a·tellúmë tule Murmoiran

I do think prefer Elendil's ending.

Explanation:

Hí lartalwë, hí tirwë

(Lit.: Here we wait, Here we watch), larta- + -lwë, tir- + -lwë

Varyalya verië, Varyalya lunga

(Lit.: your defence, bold, your defence, grave) varyalë + -lya verië, lunga

Calmangwa, cálë poicaín

(Lit.: Our lamp, your light purest) calma -ngwa, cálë poica -inqua

Motangwa, taurë alcarin

(Lit.: Our toil, your forest glorious) móta- taurë -inqua

Varyalya verië, Varyalya lunga

(Lit.: Here we wait, Here we watch)

Tenn' Ambar-metta

(Lit.: 'Til Worlds Ending (From Elendil's Oath)) ambar

Alternative ending, drawing on Early Quenyan, and manouvering poetically:

Tenn' (h)a·tellúmë tule Murmoiran
(Lit.: Until from final dusk comes the eternalmost slumber) ha telu lúmë murmë oira -inqua

This is just above and beyond. The Quenya version is neat to have also and interesting to read. I appreciate the extra effort you've gone through and the adaptations.

Thanks!
