kalaine

noun. serenity, serene (n.)

A noun appearing as ᴱQ. kalaine “serenity, serene (n.)” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s under the early root ᴱ√KALA “shine golden”, a noun form of adjective kalain(e)a “serene” (QL/44).

Neo-Quenya: I retain the adjective ᴺQ. calaina “serene” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, so I would retain noun ᴺQ. calainë “serenity” as well.

kalas

noun. brass

A noun appearing as ᴱQ. kalas (kalass-) “brass” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s under the early root ᴱ√KALA “shine golden” (QL/44).

Neo-Quenya: Since the root √KAL survives in Tolkien’s later writings, I would retain ᴺQ. calas (calass-) “brass” for purposes of Neo-Quenya.

kalain(e)a

adjective. serene

An adjective appearing as ᴱQ. kalaina or kalainea “serene” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s under the early root ᴱ√KALA “shine golden” (QL/44). Kalaina also appeared in the contemporaneous Gnomish Lexicon as equivalent to G. glaim “serene, clear, fair (espec. of weather)” (GL/39), so it may originally have referred to clear weather.

Neo-Quenya: Since √KAL still referred to “light” in Tolkien’s later writings, I would retain ᴺQ. calaina “serene” for purposes of Neo-Quenya.

kalar

noun. lettuce

A word appearing as ᴱQ. kalar “lettuce” in Early Qenya Phonology of the 1920s derived from primitive ᴱ✶karase (PE14/70), where the final s became z and then r, after which the medial r dissimilated to l.

Neo-Quenya: The dissimilations in later Quenya were different, with the medial r preventing the z from becoming r and instead dissimilating it back to s (PE19/73). As such, I would adapt this word as ᴺQ. caras “lettuce” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, which also has the advantage of differentiating it from Q. calar “lamp”. Note that the stem for this word would also be caras- rather than the usual carar- due to the same dissimulative forces.
