Gnomish

lu

noun. occasion, time

Gnomish [GL/55; LT1A/Lúmin] Group: Eldamo. Published by

lui

noun. blueness, livor, livid mark

A noun appearing as G. lui “blueness, livor, livid mark” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/55), hence = “✱bruise”.

Neo-Sindarin: Since √LUY remains the root for “blue” in Tolkien’s later writing (VT48/23), I’d adapt this word as ᴺS. lui “blueness; livor, livid mark, ✱bruise”. Likely “blueness” was the original sense, extended to include blue-coloured bruises on the body.

luim

adjective. blue

Gnomish [GL/55; LT1A/Nielluin; LT2A/Fangluin] Group: Eldamo. Published by

lul-

verb. to sing, hum a lullaby

luin

adjective. blue

lulwi

noun. a lullaby

lumbri

noun. foul weather

A word in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s appearing as G. lumbri “foul weather”, an abstract elaboration of G. lum “[dark] cloud” (GL/55), based on the early root ᴱ√LUVU or ᴱ√LUB (LT1A/Luvier; QL/57; PME/57).

Neo-Sindarin: If adapting this word to Neo-Sindarin, I would revise it ᴺS. lummor, based on (hypothetical) primitive ✱lu(m)brĭ > lummṛ(e) > lummor, where ✱lu(m)brĭ is a strengthened variant of (hypothetical) primitive ✱lubrĭ that is my proposed basis for ᴺQ. lúrë “bad weather”. I think these derivations could remain valid since the root √LUB “shadow, darkness” survives in Tolkien’s later writings (PE17/168).

Gnomish [GL/55; LT1A/Luvier] Group: Eldamo. Published by

luv-

verb. to hang, lower (of clouds)

A verb in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “to hang, lower (of clouds)” (GL/55), probably a derivative of the early root ᴱ√LUVU as suggested by Christopher Tolkien (LT1A/Luvier), though in that note he incorrectly wrote the verb as lur- as pointed out by the editors of the Gnomish Lexicon.

Gnomish [GL/55; LT1A/Luvier] Group: Eldamo. Published by

luista-

verb. to be thirsty; to parch, dry up

A verb in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s which can be used transitively for “to parch, dry up” and impersonally to mean “I am thirsty”: luista nin (GL/55). It is based on the early root ᴱ√LOYO (QL/56).

Neo-Sindarin: For purposes of Neo-Sindarin, I would simply say ni faug for “I [am] thirsty” and would use ᴺS. [G.] thista- for “to dry up” (GL/73).

lumfod

place name. Gloomy End

Name of the “third dwelling of Melko” in notes associated with the earliest Lost Tales (LT2/279). It was glossed “Gloomy End” in the Gnomish Lexicon (GL/55), a combination of lum “cloud” and fod “end”.

Gnomish [GL/55; LT2/279] Group: Eldamo. Published by

lust

noun. weather; tide; time

A noun in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s said to be the equivalent of G. lûm [“time”] or G. olod [“tide”] as well as having the sense “weather” (GL/55). It was probably based on the early root ᴱ√LUHU which had various time-related derivatives (QL/56), since in GL is was grouped with other time-words.

Gnomish [GL/39; GL/55] Group: Eldamo. Published by

luis

noun. florescence, blooming

A noun in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “florescence, blooming” (GL/54-55), probably related to G. luitha- “bloom, blossom” and derived from the early root ᴱ√LO’O [loχo] (GL/52; QL/55).

Neo-Sindarin: I would update this word to ᴺS. lostad “blooming, florescence”, the gerund of the neologism ᴺS. losta- “to bloom, blossom”.

Gnomish [GL/54; GL/55] Group: Eldamo. Published by

haimadri

adjective. lunch, food in morning, elevens

A noun in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “lunch, food in morning, elevens”, a combination of G. hai “early” and G. madri “meal” (GL/20).

crost

noun. lump, ball, cake

pectha

noun. plume

The word G. pectha “plume” appeared in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, along with G. pecthon “plume, feather” (GL/63-64), clearly cognates of ᴱQ. pekte “plume” under the early root ᴱ√PEKE (QL/73).

Neo-Sindarin: Somewhat surprisingly, there are no later “plume” or “feather” words in the currently published materials from Tolkien’s writings on Noldorin and Sindarin of the 1920s or later. Most Neo-Sindarin writers use ᴺS. pess for “feather” as the analog of word Q. quessë, which Tolkien used in the 1930s-1960s. Hialmr added this Neo-Sindarin word to the VQP (VQP) in 2015, but it has likely been floating around for much longer. As for “plume”, I personally would use an augmentative form: ᴺS. pesson “plume, (great) feather”.

tuf

noun. down, fluff

A noun for “down, fluff” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/71).

hûm

noun. sleep, slumber

A noun in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “sleep, slumber” (GL/49), likely based on the early root {ᴱ√HUMU >>} ᴱ√FUMU “sleep” (QL/39).

tunc

noun. chance; occurrence; arrival; hit at shooting; luck

lor-

verb. to sleep deep, dream (tr.)

A verb appearing as G. lor- “sleep deep, dream” (GL/54), clearly based on the early root ᴱ√LORO “doze, slumber” (QL/56).

Neo-Quenya: I’d retain the verb ᴺS. lor- for purposes of Neo-Sindarin, but with the sense “sleep, slumber” only; for “dream” I’d use N. oltha- (Ety/ÓLOS). This neologism has likely been floating around for a while, but it was first suggested to me by Elaran.

ûg

noun. mud

A noun in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “mud” (GL/74), possibly derived from a variant (?ᴱ√UK) of the Early Root ᴱ√LUKU from the contemporaneous Gnomish Lexicon which likewise had derivatives like ᴱQ. lukso “mud” (QL/56).

fent

noun. snake

A word for “snake” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, along with a deleted variant fenlug (fenlog-) (GL/34), the latter probably a combination with G. lûg “snake”. It was clearly a cognate of ᴱQ. fent “serpent” from the contemporaneous Qenya Lexicon (QL/38).

lûda-

verb. to bloom, grow

A verb in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “to bloom, grow” (GL/55), probably related to G. luitha- “bloom, blossom” and derived from the early root ᴱ√LO’O [loχo] (GL/52; QL/55).

ilon

noun. sky

A word for “sky” in an early name list from the 1910s and appearing in a couple early names: G. Thlim Quing Ilon “✱Folk of the Heavenly Arc” and G. Cris o Teld Quing Ilon “Gully of the Rainbow Roof” (PE13/101, 104), the latter revised to G. Cris Ilbranteloth (LT2/202). In the contemporaneous Gnomish Lexicon, however, G. Ilon was the name of Ilúvatar (GL/50).
