Beware, older languages below! The languages below were invented during Tolkien's earlier period and should be used with caution. Remember to never, ever mix words from different languages!

rôn

noun. embrace, clasp

A noun appearing as G. rôn or rôs “embrace” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, related to the verb G. rôtha- “embrace” (GL/66). On another page rôn⁽⁾ “clasp, embrace” was marked archaic and tied to (likewise archaic) G. “arm” (GL/65). Perhaps this word became archaic due to clashes with G. rôn “liver”.

Neo-Sindarin: I adapt the related Gnomish verb G. rôtha- as ᴺS. ranga- (see that entry for discuss), so I would revise its noun form to ᴺS. rangoth as a combination of that verb with the suffix -th.

rô-

verb. to remain, stay, stand; to endure

A verb in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “remain, stay, stand”, which in combination with the dative also meant “endure” (GL/47). It appeared above an adjective form G. “enduring, long suffering; quiet, gentle, docile”. There was a bar joining these two words, an “X” next to the bar possibly indicating their rejection. These words may have been based on the early root ᴱ√RU’U with derivatives like ᴱQ. rue “rest, stillness, remaining, steadfastness” (QL/80).

rôn

noun. liver

The word G. rôn⁽⁾ “liver” appeared in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, but its etymology is unclear (GL/65). Q. rāna “moon” was written in pencil nearby, but this seems to be from an earlier layer of the lexicon, and may be unrelated.

Neo-Sindarin: I’d retain ᴺS. rôn “liver” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin, perhaps as a derivative of the later root √RON “solid, firm”, since (a) there are no later words for “liver” and (b) the word rôn does not appear with any other meaning in later writings.

ô

noun. the sea

A word for “the sea” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, derived from primitive ᴱ✶ou̯a and probably based on the early root ᴱ√’O’O (GL/61; QL/70).

rôtha-

verb. to embrace

A verb appearing as G. rôtha- “embrace” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s related to the noun G. rôn “embrace” (GL/66), which in turn was related to G. “arm” (GL/65).

Neo-Sindarin: The later word for “arm” was N. rhanc from The Etymologies of the 1930s, usually replaced by ᴺS. ranc for purposes of Neo-Sindarin, so I would revise the Gnomish verb to ᴺS. ranga- “to embrace” based on the later noun form.

rôma

noun. shoulder

A noun for “shoulder” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, related to G. ram “wing” (GL/64, 66) and so probably derived from the early root ᴱ√RAHA “stretch forward”.

osp(a)

noun. foam

A noun “foam” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s with variants osp and ospa (GL/63), probably derived from the root ᴱ√Palas (QL/72).

tortha-

verb. to scorch

A verb in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “scorch” (GL/71), probably based on the early root ᴱ√TORO (QL/94).

brantha-

verb. to scorch

A verb in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s appearing as G. brantha- “scorch”, related to (and possibly derived from) G. brant “cooked, done; overdone” (GL/24).

Neo-Sindarin: I recommend restoring this confluence of Gnomish cooking-related words in Neo-Sindarin based on a Neo-Root ᴺ√BRATH “cook”, and would adapt this word as ᴺS. branna- “to scorch” to better fit Sindarin phonology.

rag-

verb. to break asunder, burst

A verb appearing as G. rag- “break asunder, burst” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/64), perhaps based on the early root ᴱ√RAKA “pile up”, though the meaning doesn’t match (QL/78).

Neo-Sindarin: The Quenya verb Q. rac- “to break” appears in Tolkien’s writings of the 1960s (MC/223), so I think this Gnomish verb can be salvaged as ᴺS. rag- “to break (asunder), burst”. For example, Fiona Jallings used rag- for “break” in her A Fan’s Guide to Neo-Sindarin (FGNS).
